Yellow Jacket Wasp

Yellow jacket wasps are bright yellow wasps with black pattern on their body, which is around 3/8 to 5/8 inch long and is hairless. Like all other wasps, it has a well developed head with short antennae and large eyes. Their distinctive markings, smaller size as compared to other wasps and unique, side to side flight pattern before landing are their identifying features. Yellow jacket wasps can be very aggressive for defending their nest and can sting which is quite painful. Hence, they can be quite a threat if they have a nest around your house.

Habits

Yellow jacket wasps, simply called wasps are social wasps who live in nests in large numbers. There are as many as 30,000 individuals in a colony, which consist of queens, workers and males. The queen mates with the males and builds a nest with chewed up wood fibres that resembles paper. It consists of many cells where eggs are laid and larvae are fed with meat and insects brought by the workers. The adult wasps feed on both insects as well as nectar, fruits etc.

They usually build their nests at secluded places. It can be on the trees, in shrubs or inside houses and buildings at hidden corners like hollow walls, sheds, porches etc. Wasps are very aggressive and can attack anyone who looks like a threat to their nest. Also, they can sting multiple times, unlike bees.

How to Prevent Damage

  • Check if there are any open entry points in your house like cracks, torn screens and vents, which can be used by wasps to get entry in your house and make nests on your walls.
  • Always place lids on your garbage bins as wasps can build nests nearby if they find source for food.
  • If you eat anything outdoors, clean the area well as anything that they find worth eating may invite wasps.
  • Call professionals if things go beyond your control.

We emphasize on using green methods to exterminate digger bees that are both very effective as well as environment friendly.
