House Cricket

House crickets become a nuisance for most of us during summer months. Their habit of making constant chirpy sounds irritates people. These creatures have big hind legs, giving them the ability to jump long distances in proportion to their size. House crickets exist all across the globe.

Habits

The insect has brownish-yellow shade, with darker bands around its head. The 'kids' hatch from eggs laid by the female crickets which are deposited in tiny cracks, crevices and soil. These eggs hatch in a couple of weeks and the nymphs emerge. Their look is quite similar to adults. The only exception is absence of wings in them. They become an adult in two to three months.

Their life span as an adult is not more than three months. As for the food, the house cricket can consume just anything. They like to consume soft plant matter, but will also eat other insects and carrion. They can damage clothing and other fabrics including synthetics. They eat large holes in fabric, destroying the clothes. They prefer to hide themselves during the day, and come out at night. They can complete their life cycle indoors, without any need to venture outside.

As for the singing, it is only the male cricket which sings to attract the females. As the temperature rises, their songs become louder. A love sick cricket may sing for several hours at a time.

How to Prevent Damage

  • Get cracks and crevices in your house repaired. These allow penetration from the exterior.
  • Changing your outdoor lighting is useful. Instead of bright lights that draw insects, use low-level yellow bug lights.
  • Ensure that low-growing vegetation is away from the walls of your house.
  • Use sticky traps to capture crickets and destroy them later.
  • Vacuum up crickets you see in the house and kill them later.
  • Call professionals if things go beyond your control.

We emphasize on using green methods to exterminate House Cricket that are both very effective as well as environment friendly.
