German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are brown to almost black insects, around 1/2 to 5/8-inches long and have two dark streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Though they have wings, but are not able to fly much.

The German cockroach is one of the cockroaches that are most commonly found in households. They hide in the secluded areas of the house like the cabinets, kitchen cupboards, and bathroom corners and so on.

Habits

A female German cockroach produces egg cases that contain multiple eggs. The female carries the egg case in its abdomen for some time, and drops them at a protected place. Nymphs are produced from the eggs within the egg cases. An adult German cockroach lives for around 100 to 200 days. The German cockroaches are found in households, and they eat almost everything. They are omnivorous and a scavenger and feed on starch, sugary foods, meats and so on. They can even survive on items like soap, glue and toothpaste. Hence, these cockroaches are often considered as strong insects that can survive well under all conditions. They hide in secluded places, where they remain for most of the time. Some of them may come out at night, in search of food but remain hidden for most of the time.

German cockroaches are comparatively smaller than the other species and are hence, able to hide in very small areas. Also, they reproduce and mature at a very fast rate leading to high rate of growth of their population which makes them a nuisance and also difficult to exterminate.

How to Prevent Damage

  • German cockroaches prefer moist areas, hence make sure that there are no leaks in your house that may invite cockroaches.
  • Keeping the house clutter free, specially in areas that are not visited often like the garage and storage area would help. Storage of wood and paper materials would provide them a favorable place to reside in.
  • The food items in your kitchen should be well stored in tight containers, as if not stored properly it can make a perfect place for cockroaches providing them ample food, while contaminating your food and spreading diseases..
  • Call professionals if things get out of control.

We emphasize on using green methods to exterminate furniture carpet beetles that are both very effective as well as environment friendly.
