Angoumois Grain Moth

Angoumois Grain Moth infests stored dry foods like cereals, grains, fruit, and pet food. These pests can cause huge spoilage in commercial grain storage warehouses. In homes too, these pests are a nuisance. For dealing with grain moths, the key is to find the source of the infestation which will be in some type of stored food product.

Habits

These are small light brown insects with forewings and hind wings are fringed with long hair. The fully developed larvae are yellow-white with brown heads. Eggs are laid by the females on or near grain. The time-span for larvae to develop is four to eight days. They bore into the kernels where they feed and develop. After undergoing three molts, they pupate within the kernel in a silken cocoon. Adults take up to two weeks to emerge.

Many a time, the moth infest the grain even before it is harvested. The larvae breed within the undamaged kernels of corn, barley, rye, oats, rice, and other seeds. It is a common pest which infests the grain and becomes a nuisance for us. Adults fly well, and often, they are confused with the clothes moth. However, it is not the adult moth who cause damage to the grain. It is the larvae.

How to Prevent Damage

  • The weakest aspect in the life cycle of the grain moth is its requirement of high moisture in the grain. If you contain the moisture, the pest can also be contained.
  • Fumigation is effective in controlling the grain moth.
  • Store your seed in an air-tight container. Prevention is better than cure.
  • Put the grains in sunlight. If would help to get it rid of the larvae.
  • Call professionals if things get out of control.

We emphasize on using green methods to exterminate Angoumois Grain Moth that are both very effective as well as environment friendly.
