Webbing Clothes Moth

Webbing Clothes Moth are serious pest, which derive nourishment from clothing. They get their energy from wool as well as other natural fibers. The moth prefer moist conditions. They damage clothes most commonly in dark, hidden areas, as under collars and cuffs. However, if the larvae are very active, they may be seen crawling on clothes. When feeding between the carpet and the floor, their larvae may extend their silken feeding tubes along the floor cracks. The webbing beneath the carpet indicates the feeding pattern.

Habits

The adult insect is 1 to 2 cm. long. The wings and body are usually golden except for reddish hairs on top of the head. Small caterpillars have creamy white color with a light brown head capsule. The female moths place their eggs in the infested fabric. They attach the eggs with glue they secrete. Eggs hatch in four days to three weeks. The newly emerged larvae begin feeding immediately. They like to feed on silken tunnels or mats. Adult insects live for approximately two weeks.

The moth larvae can feed on clothes, carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, felt, animal hair, and stored wool, bringing plenty of damage to your place of living. These are the most common clothes moths, found in the United States. They prefer to hide during the daytime, and come out in night. This is the reason people are usually unable to see them. Adult male moths can penetrate through surprisingly narrow cracks, and can fly considerable distances.

How to Prevent Damage

  • Locate the source of infestation. Examine closets and stored goods for larvae cases and moths.
  • Use a flashlight and nail file while checking for the moths.
  • It is best not to treat clothing with insecticides for it could damage the garments. Treat all cracks and crevices in infested areas with a residual insecticide.
  • Thoroughly clean rugs, rug pads, under heavy furniture, and carpets, cracks in closets, under baseboard, and other hiding places.
  • Call professionals if things go beyond your control.

We emphasize on using green methods to exterminate Webbing Clothes Moth that are both very effective as well as environment friendly.
